Traditional Vs New Media

We all have our opinion which media is better regarding to communication. There are diverse of media out there, we can say that each of them has their advantages and disadvantages. They have their pros and cons. It is natural because everything has it's own limitations.

But in your opinion, which is better? Traditional or New? But before you take your stand, let me explain what is Traditional and New Media.

Traditional media or called as the Old Media or the Legacy Media are one of the means before for mass communication. It is even used till now and still being appreciated by the majority. It has existed and still existing today even before the new advent of the new medium of the Internet. The way of communication with this media is in the way of the Television, Radio, Movies, print like newspapers, magazines, books and other related materials.

The New Media refers to the on demand access to content anytime, anywhere, or any digital device as well as interactive user feedback, creative participation. Most of the new media are described as technologies that have the characteristics of being manipulated, networkable, dense, comprehensive and interactive. Some examples are the internet, websites, computer multimedia, video games, CD-ROMs, and DVD-ROMs. It does not include the use of the television, radio, movie film, books, magazines or other print materials unless they are attached with digital  technologies that allow them to interact digitally. So the New Media basically means about digital interaction.

Now, the thing is both of these media has their own advantages and disadvantages. Both of them can be a benefit to us especially if we want to interact conveniently. Both of them are invented for us to ease things. But what are the pros and cons?

The Traditional Media

I. Advantages

  • They are effective in gathering the attention of the public.
  • They can be productive in interacting with the public.
  • People have many varieties they can choose to communicate to the public
II. Disadvantages
  • They cost a lot of money to broadcast an information.
  • It is expensive to be aired.
  • Limited information can only be shown to the public because of the government.
The New Media

I. Advantages
  • They are effective in gathering the attention of the public.
  • There are countless of information that can be gathered because of the wiki-knowledge management.
  • They can be used as a viewing, listening or reading material because of it being a multimedia.
  • Information is not limited and can be shown to the public.
  • Only an internet connection is required and internet enabled devices eg. cellular phones, computers, etc.
  • Employers and employees can work through the internet.
II. Disadvantages
  • Because of it being not limited, people tend to use it for illegal acts like online piracy, cybersex, online gambling and other related issues.
  • Because of it's too much information and being open for public, even explicit material are viewed by the minorities.
  • People can't help to gossip or criticize others through it because no one is watching your movement unlike in the traditional media, excluding China, North Korea and other communistic entities.
Overall, I can say again that both medias are effective. But as far as which do I prefer, I like the New Media better. You don't have to spend so much money to access the internet and get connected to people unlike the traditional media. You can publish your works through the new media. I mean as a student the internet is easier to use in terms of researching, studying and connecting to my fellow students. It can't be helped if people tend to abuse it. But as an individual, I can make a difference because I can prove that the New Media is proficient to anything else.

This is just my opinion and I am not trying to convince you to stand with me or anything. I'm just being realistic and practical.
